A Missing Brother — Chapter 1

I'd been riding my bike most of the day with my younger step-brother, Dusty, short for Dustin. Dusty had dirty blonde hair and green eyes, while I had jet-black hair and hazel eyes. Our last name was Stevenson. I suppose I should tell you my full name, that would help, wouldn't it? That name you were just asking about? It's Kyle, Kyle Stevenson. I'm eleven years old, while my exuberant and wild little brother just happens to be seven years old. I know, I know, you're probably wondering why I'm hanging out with my seven year old brother, while I'm eleven years old. So old, so close to hitting puberty, heck, maybe even maturity some day. However, I suppose I shouldn't just tell part of the story, let me start from the beginning, the very beginning, and work my way forward.
"Kyyyle!" Dusty had been yelling at me all day. All I had wanted to do today was simply work on my History report on the Romans. I only had two days to complete this project - including today - and I hadn't even started it yet. But, of course, my insufferable little step-brother just had to insist on going to the park, and yelling that in my ear. All he had wanted to do all day, was to go to the park. "Come on Kyle, it'll be dark in a couple of hours!"
Sighing, I got up from my desk chair to go play with Dusty at the park. Dusty and his father had been living with my mother - Emily by the way - and I for almost as long as I could remember. "Fine, I'll go to your silly little park with you. But for an hour at the most. Grab you coat and lets get going." I said this with obvious authority, just ready to go and get back.
"Yay! Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, Kyle! I PROMISE you'll have a great time." Dusty was obviously excited. He didn't get to go to the park that often, Kyle's mother had decreed that Dusty needed someone to come with him to the park from now on. This was a result from Dusty going to the park one day, and being stalked all the way home before he left Dusty alone. Heck, even I'lve been stalked by these weird people before. It was as if some group of people had it in for our family. They had stalked me much more often than they had Dusty. Dusty's father, my step-father had tried to hold a police investigation. He had almost gotten it approved when my mother had talked to him out of it. For some strange reason though, she wouldn't tell me why she didn't want to get those goons arrested, she'd just said that he'd understand one day - Whatever that meant.
As Dusty and I stepped out into the cold winter morning, I felt a shiver down my spine. For some odd reason, I had a feeling it wasn't from the dropping temperature. I gazed around, expecting to find some other person following or looking at Dusty and me. However, when I looked, all I saw was the soft fall of the velvety snow. "Come on Dusty, keep up! I want to get to the park and back to my report as soon as possible." I said this with concern, I just had that feeling that something interesting yet bad or dangerous was going to happen, and it was going to happen to Kyle and Dusty.
"Hurry up, Kyle! If you're in such a hurry, then quit walking so slow!" Dusty was starting to get impatient, just as I was earlier and trotted on ahead, leaving me in the dust. Dusty had a point though, even if I had wanted to hurry, I began to slow down on the paved street. Wanting to stay close to our home, our safe two-story house. But, I couldn't leave Dusty alone, he'd only tell mother later, plus, he'd become just plain scared.
I trotted up along to where Dusty was, or at least I tried. Dusty had taken a sharp right up on Himmel Street, which by the way, is Heaven in German. When I had reached the corner of Himmel Street and St. David's, Dusty was nowhere to be seen. I hesitated, there was nobody there, no people on their lawns, and no Dusty. Only Kyle and an endless amount of white and grey houses.
