A full moon hung weightlessly in the sky as the stars caressed the endless black backdrop of night. The icy wind blew through the immense fir trees as the creatures in the forest hid in silence...except for 3. Riley, Me, and Vince.

We stood ready to fight, teeth bared and all. Vince's pack had already taken the rest of the pack we brought with us; a total of 4. In turn, we defeated all 6 of his in just as much time. Now the battle was just between the 3 of us. The moonlight reflected off our sparkling teeth and Vince's eyes were a glowing red.

"Any last words, mutt?" He growled at me.

"There's no need for any. It's you that should be saying last words Vince." Riley growled, stepping forward.

"Oh, look at the hero! Protecting your pack, eh? Isn't that a captains job?" Vince hissed.

"Since Xavier is down I am captain." Riley growled in return, stepping even closer to him.

"You know what i think, pup?" Vince asked.

"What?" Riley growled.

"Talk is cheap, it's all in your actions." Vince shouted, pouncing on Riley.

I watched in respect as the 2 wolves fought. It was only code that we don't get involved unless death was approaching our fellow pack. Captains fought it out first.

Vince found an opportunity and bit down on Riley's furry black neck. Riley let out a yelp and i couldn't take this anymore. Code or no code, it was my time now.

I bit Vince's hind leg and threw him against the back of an oak tree.

"What do you think you're doing princess?" He mocked, running at me. In response, I bit down on his neck as his body crashed against mine. I felt him stiffen and thought i had finished him, i pulled away and smiled in victory.

To my dismay, he had risen and before i could do a thing he bit into my neck and i fell to the ground; too weak to stand up again. He turned back to Riley who was struggling to get back up again. I gathered my strength and hopelessly tried to get back up. Vince charged at Riley and hit his side head on. He fell to the ground again and Vince finished him, taking a sinking bite into his already wounded side.

Riley then let out an ear-splitting cry into the night and my eyes opened wide in horror at the sight of my eternal love, dead on the cold forest ground. I glared at Vince and suddenly had an adrenaline rush like never before. I got up and threw myself at him, finishing him off in mere minutes. When my duty was done, i walked over to Riley, laid on the ground beside him and let out a sorrowful howl.

I woke up shaking and screaming out Riley's name. I opened my eyes and Jake was hovering over me with a worried look on his brown furry wolf-face.

"Come on, let's go for a walk." He whispered, nuzzling my neck and leading me out of the tent.

"Another Riley dream?" He asked, kicking a stone on the ground.

"Yeah, I just wish i would've been able to do something...you know?" I asked, looking up at my closest friend in our wolf pack.

"But you couldn't; Rosalie. These are just things that are going to happen when you're in a pack. Death is a given." He said, nuzzling my neck again and walking closer to my still trembling body.

"I know, but why Riley? It should've been me." I muttered, looking up at the moonlit sky.

"No, then Riley would be here suffering. Things like this happen for a reason, we just don't know the reason yet." Jake whispered.
