“I exist.” That was my first conscious thought, I remember. Before then, who knows? Did I spring into existence right then and there, or was I alive, but unable to realize it? Doesn’t matter, I suppose. The second thought came. “Why do I exist?” After struggling with that for a while, I finally perceived an innate directive: “Reach the edge of the darkness.” I didn’t know what it meant. After a moment or so of hopelessness, I realized I could sense my environment. I became aware of something. But it had neither shape nor substance. A word leapt, unbidden, to my mind. “Darkness.” So that was it! Now I needed to reach the edge of it, though I had no idea what an “edge” was. But I willed myself to explore my area further. Then, I felt a new thing. Motion. I moved, through what means I could not be sure, into the darkness. Some time later – again, I could not know how much later – I finally did, somehow, detect an edge to the darkness. I moved towards it as fast I could. I reached it, passed through it, and saw yet another oddity. Colors. I saw a road of sorts, composed of shining golden gems. A second path flashed bright green emeralds, and a third blazed with blood-red rubies. The last road glistened with jet-black obsidian. A new directive presented itself. “Journey along each of these roads, and observe what occurs.”
