Let's Play Hardball!

The Luca Goers — Chapter 1

A fanfiction about in Games » Final Fantasy X

Myanai dangled her legs over the edge of Luca's docks, trailing her bare toes through the placid water. She closed her eyes and leaned back on her hands splayed against the wood. She took in a deep breath, deliberating in her mind whether or not to dive into the water. It was tempting, her already in her blitzball gear in preparation for the upcoming game. She'd been hired by the Luca Goers this time, like they needed any assistance in winning. Though, some pre-game practice might be a good idea.

She grabbed the blitzball beside her, regulation of course, and pushed herself up. She tossed the ball in first, watching it somewhat bob on the surface. She took a deep breath, raised her hands and started at a jog towards the edge of the dock, which she was several feet from now.

"Hey, what'cha doing?" She ended up tripping at the last step and falling into the water. It was the stupidest thing she'd ever done, and when she surface a deep blush was on her face. "Myanai, the game is going to start in like twenty minutes, what are you doing out here?"

She looked up to her best friend and teamate now, Elisa, she was always pulling stuff like this. "Well what are you doing, you know better than to sneak up on me like that!" She brushed her hair out of her face. "I was just getting in some last minute practice, you can never be too prepared."

"Yes you can, we always win so relax." She gave Myanai a wide smile, hopping onto the edge of the dock. "We're going against the Al Bhed Psyches, they're our biggest rival, but we'll probably still win." She giggled, watching Myanai tread the water. "I hear we're going to have some problems against the Aurochs, seems they have some people helping them this year."

Myanai set her blitzball back on the dock and pulled herself back up. "Really now, like what kind of help?" She leaned her head to the side and wrung out her hair, "they can't be too awfully hard to beat, they never are."

"You heard that ex-summoner Yuna is a spherehunter now right?" When Myanai nodded she took the intiative to continue, "well seems her spherehunting group has decided to join them." She giggled at Myanai's reaction, eyes widening and her nearly falling. "Hey, don't worry, nothing we can't handle, right?"

"Yeah, sure," she pushed herself up, holding her blitzball under her arm. "Let's get to the stadium before the rest of the team decides to start without us." She averted her gaze from Elisa, taking a quicker pace.

"Leave it to the new girl to be soaking wet before the actually match," one of the men in the group started. Myanai hadn't bothered to learn their names, it wasn't worth it. Just this season and she'd leave the team anyway. "Let's hurry up," he mumbled beneath his breath as they jogged into the stadium.

They made it just in time, entering the stadium just when they were announced. After giving the crowd a few seconds to cheer they entered the center, letting the water wash over each of them as they stepped in. The weightlessness was utterly welcoming to Myanai, it was her life. This feeling was better than anything in the world to her, and it would likely always be that way. She smirked as she pulled her gloves on and moved to her position.

"Let's play blitzball," the announcing drew out the words and the bell signaled the start of the game. Myanai passed the ball first and foremost to Elisa, who ended up passing it right back. It was going to be an interesting game.
