"Did you see that, Barcie?" asked Jackie. "I think Eric was checking you out."
"If he was, I'm not buying it," I said. "He's so... fake."
"Yeah, but he's hot," said Jackie.
"Hot isn't everything. Take Ron for example," I said.
"Well Ron is everything! Everyone loves him!"
"See? Everyone loves a quarterback." I flipped out my compact mirror to see if my eyeshadow was still on. I smiled at myself. My hair is waist-long and dark chestnut brown, my skin is olive-toned and I'm proud to say that I tanned it myself on the beach. Not in "the microwave" like most kids at our school. My eyes are brown, but I wear hazle contacts because they fit me better. In Brookland High School, there's no such thing as popular. There's either cool or not cool and to be cool like us you really have to strive.
Well, there Is one exception to the popular rule. Everyone likes Ron Harley. All the girls (and even some of the boys) teachers included can't get him off their minds.
"Hey Barcelona, there's a new boy in school!" Jackie smirked.
"You're kidding."
"No."
"From where?" I asked
"He's right over there. Go ask," she said. Leaned against a tree, standing alone was a tall looking boy, I'd have to think a junior. I'm a freshman.
"Hi," I said, flipping my hair.
"Hi," he answered, turning around.
"So, where ya from?" I said smiling.
"A long way from here," I stopped dead in my tracks. He was absolutely gorgeous. His hair was jet black and combed to the side in front, not too short and kind of messy. His eyes were huge and grey like the moon but his face wis kind- soft. But I'd loose my train of thought if I concentrated on that now.
"Cool. It's nice where you come from?"
"Do I have to answer?" I cocked an eyebrow at him.
"I'm Barcelona,"
"I'm October,"
"You're kidding, right?"
"Do I look like I'm kidding?" No, you look like you're gorgeous, is what I wanted to say.
"Well, you win. I've never heard that one before." I said. He smiled. His teeth were perfectly white and aligned. I could have melted into a pile of butter. Just then, the bell rang.
"See you at lunch," I said. He smiled. I'm good.
