"Thank you for coming, Jolzyn. I know it is short notice but we need your expertise once again." Colonial Jones shook my hand as I walked up to his desk. There were two other men standing in his office, two men I had never seen before. One of them looked to be in his mid to late forties with dark black hair cut nicely and a black mustache. He reminded me of a cop. The other was quiet young, my human age perhaps with sandy messy short hair and blue eyes. I looked at them as I sat down across from the Colonial. His office was a drab brown, perfect for the Military. But this wasn't just the military, this was a special ops program based around me. I am one of the oldest creatures in the world, a half breed of vampire and elf. I have been working with the United States Military since they found me and promised to keep me alive. I hunt down my own kind. I am a Vampire Slayer.
"Who are these two?" I asked pointing at them both. They shifted on their feet a little, you could tell they were nervous. I was glad they were, at least they had some idea of who I was.
"This is Corporal Charlie Paxton and this young man is Private Michael Greene." Colonial replied. They nodded at me. I turned back to the Colonial waiting for my next assignment. I didn't like killing my own kind, but I didn't want some human to take my life from me. I would do what I was told. Besides, the vampires they found and wanted destroyed were terrorizing the humans anyway, barely worth surviving.
"Why am I here?" I asked crossing my right leg over my left and folding my hands on my knee.
"You are going to Forks, Washington in the guise of a new student named Bella Swan. Corporal Paxton has been living there all his life so it will be easy to say you are a long lost daughter of his, his name will be Charlie Swan. Private Greene will be inserted in the school as well as Mike Newton. I am sure you won't need help, but he's there nonetheless." Colonial explained.
"What am I doing going to some Podunk Northern town?" I scoffed. Paxton looked a little upset.
"There has been reports of vampires actually living and interacting with humans there. One is even a surgeon at their hospital. They go by the names of Carlisle, Esme, Edward, Alice and Emmett Cullen and Rosalie and Jasper Hale. They are a family. The story goes like this, Carlisle and Esme could never have children so they adopted teens as they tend to be more unwanted than babies, and since none of them are actually related, except for Rosalie and Jasper, they seem to all be together as well." The Colonial looked like he was about to be sick. I was floored.
"They can overcome their need for blood that well? And are these those new vampires, the ones you told me about that don't need to stay out of the sun? The ones that stakes won't work on? It's fire or bust right?" I asked.
"You are right. Everything you need to know is here in this binder. Don't lose this! And keep us up to date on a regular basis. Our code name with be Mom or Rene. Your background story is in there as well. Study it, become familiar with it. You start Junior Year on Monday." The Colonial stood up and I followed. After he saluted me I left and headed to pack. This wasn't going to be much fun, but it was my job and my survival so I was going to do it.
It took several hours to fly out to Seattle, and another hour or two to get to Forks from the airport. I had to admit, there was a lot of nice scenery. The trees and the mountains were spectacular and the scents were amazing. I also enjoyed smaller towns, not that I was going to tell Charlie about that it might make his time more relaxed. We dropped Mikey off half way to Forks so we weren't seen arriving together and Charlie changed from Military garb to the Sheriff of Forks, Washington. I hopped in the police cruiser and shook my head with a grin. These military boys sure had an imagination.
The one good thing about such a long flight and car ride was that I was able to read about my life as Miss Bella Swan. I had long brown hair now, thanks to my Elvin magic and the dark brown eyes were mine to begin with. I was going to miss the choppy blood red hair, but I'd get over it. I was quite pale for a girl from Arizona, but I didn't care. I wasn't going to be spray tanning myself every morning. My clothing left a lot to be desired. I'd much rather have leather and spikes, but as an average teenage girl I had to look nothing like the destroyer of vampires that I really was. Right now I was wearing jeans and a Seattle sweat shirt and a navy blue headband pushing my hair out of my face. I needed a new wardrobe.
My mother, or Rene as Colonial liked to call Head Quarters was supposed to be a woman named Rene Drywer. She was traveling with my young step father while he tried to get into the big leagues in Baseball. That is why I moved to Forks, to stay with my father so my mother didn't have to choose between us. So, I was supposed to be selfless. That was going to be tough. This was probably some kind of joke from HQ knowing that my main personality traits were thirsty and selfish.
I was brought away from my thoughts when the police car my 'father' was driving bumped up onto the gravel crescent drive in front of a fairly sweet farm house. The house was white and in need of some paint. There was an upstairs where I assumed the bedrooms were, I couldn't wait to see mine. It better be the biggest, I thought. I opened the car door and began to walk up the steps to wait to be let in when I heard Charlie clear his throat. I turned to look at him. He was standing there staring at me with his hands on his hips. He looked like a father, it was quiet bizarre.
"Yes?" I asked raising an eyebrow.
"Have you forgotten your baggage?" He asked, raising his eyebrow in return.
"No, have you?" I scoffed as I walked back down and retrieved my bags from the back seat of the cruiser. He was up the stairs before I had returned and held the door open for me. "Where's my room?"
"Up the stairs, first door on your left." Charlie said gruffly as he headed into the kitchen to make some coffee. I could tell that's what he wanted, he sounded like me when I needed the liquid anti-depressant.
"Make me a cup, please." I called from halfway up the stairs. When I reached the first door on the left at the head of the stairs I opened it and stepped inside. It was set up for a teenager. I almost threw up everywhere. "AND WE ARE REMODELING THIS ROOM YESTERDAY!" I screamed down the stairs. I heard Charlie chuckle. I plopped my bags down and headed down to get a mug of coffee.
"This isn't so bad, is it?" Charlie asked handing me a mug of coffee and as I searched out the cream and sugar I thought about how to answer that question. So far it was alright, but I hated my bedroom. I supposed it would just suit us both best if I was honest. I turned and leaned against the sink with my cracked mug in this fixer-upper kitchen of this fixer-upper house and watched my eyes reflect back to me in the caramel colored liquid.
"I hate my room, pink should die. If it were darker colors, reds, blacks…things like that. And I am not looking forward to going to school. Kids are cruel you know. And I'm lonely. God, I am thousands of years old Charlie! I have been around your Special Ops people for decades. The only new faces come when the old faces die or retire." I frowned. Charlie was sitting at the kitchen table looking down at his coffee too when he nodded up and down slowly and fluidly.
"I totally understand what you mean." He scoffed. "And I can see what I can do about changing that room around. I need specifics though. I'm not artsy-fartsy."
I smiled at him and took the seat across from him at the table. "Crimson walls, black iron and black bedding. That should be easy enough. I want it to look like a gothic castle. I am sure there's an aspiring home decorator somewhere in this town. There's always a little group of people who want to get the hell outa Dodge." I smiled at him. He smiled back. So far so good.
I learned a lot about Charlie. He had a daughter with a woman named Nancy seventeen years ago and during a tough break up Nancy took their thirteen month old daughter and fled only to fall into the river and drown to death. His daughter, Lizzy, drowned as well. I felt pretty terrible for this guy and it made me feel a bit better about doing this with him specifically. I swore to myself I wasn't going to kill off the vampires until I graduated and fulfilled every dream a high school girl would have. If not, Charlie would never live the dream of watching his little girl become a woman.
You may ask why I have grown so attached to this man, Charlie Paxton. I don't remember much about my life before I was taken by the United States Government and most of the men in the Special Ops treated me like a monster or someone who was too powerful for emotions. Charlie treated me like a - well a human! I would be forever grateful to him for that.
"Well, it's about that time for me. I don't know when you go to sleep, but I am pooped. I'll see you in the A.M. Don't forget - six in the morning is get up time." He smiled as he trudged slowly to the stairs.
"Yes, Sir! I'm off to bed as well." I smiled and he let me pass him. I knew he didn’t hear me when I leapt out of my bedroom window and out to the woods behind the house. I enjoyed human blood most of all, but as I was staying in quiet the small town, animals would have to suffice, until I got in good at a blood bank or something. I rarely needed to drink, but this was something I did for precautionary reasons more than anything this night. I took down a grizzly bear and was sure I saw someone or something out in the distance but paid no attention as I fed. That night I slept quite well, better than I had in a long time. The next day I would be going to Forks High School and Cullens help me, I would stay there until I got my diploma!
