A/N: I had an inspiration for this one a while ago and I've been writing it ever since. I've got enough make for at least 3 more chapters but I'm not posting it until I get some reviews from people saying they'd like to read more.
R&R please
disclaimer: I don't own Fall Out Boy. Sadly...
“I hate this town,” Skylar said as she pulled into a parking spot in her new high school. Why did her dad have to move her?
“Sit over there, next to Patrick,” my new homeroom teacher, Mr. Trainman, directed me. Of course I had no idea who Patrick was, so I had to ask.
“Um, who?” I asked.
“Patrick, wave,” Mr. Trainman said. A boy with straight ginger hair and kind of adorable sideburns waved my way with a little smile that was pretty hard to see. I walked over and took a seat.
“Hi. Patrick,” he said holding his hand out.
“Hi, I'm Skylar,” I replied.
“I never met anyone with that name, it's really cool,” he smiled.
“Thanks,” I said. Just then the morning announcements started.
“No one really listens to the announcements,” Patrick said after about a minute.
“Oh, well I guess it wouldn't really matter anyway 'cause I'm new and I have no idea what they were talking about anyway...” I said looking at my new schedule. “Could you tell me where room 111 is?”
“You have music theory first?” Patrick asked.
“Yeah, why?” I asked.
“Because that's what I have,” he replied.
“Oh, that's cool,” I said.
“So, what do you play?” he asked me.
“Cello and flute for school,” I replied.
“So you're in band and orchestra. Are you in choir too?” he asked.
“Yeah, are you?” I asked.
“Only in choir, just started this year,” he replied.
“That's cool,” I said.
“Yeah. Here, let me see your schedule so I can see what classes we have together,” he said, grabbing my schedule off my desk. “The only classes we don't have together are 3rd period, 4th period and 8th period,” he said, giving me my schedule back. It's good to know I'll know at least someone in most of my classes.
“What do I have those periods?” I asked.
“Orchestra/band, gym and French,” he replied. “I have art third, Spanish fourth and gym eighth.”
“Okay, so I guess I'll have to find my way around for the rest of the classes,” I said.
“Well the orchestra and band rooms are right across the hall from the music room we're in 1st period. And the gym is right down the hall from the languages. Basically, all of the subjects are clustered in the same hallways,” he reassured me.
“Okay, that helps...or will help,” I said.
“It's not that hard to navigate,” he said.
“That's good,” I said as the bell rang. Off to music theory...
“You can sit where every you want,” the teacher said as I walked in with Patrick.
“Here, you can sit next to Alexa, she's in the back, the person with the multi-colored hair,” Patrick said pointing.
“Okay,” I said walking that way.
“Hi,” Alexa said. “I'm Alexa.”
“Hi, I'm Skylar. Patrick told me to sit here,” I said.
“Oh that's cool. So how long have you been in Morton Grove?” she asked.
“Just got here about three days ago, actually,” I replied.
“Oh, so you're really new,” she smiled. “Don't worry, it's actually not as bad as it seems here. And you already have at least two friends.”
I smiled, “That's actually pretty good to know.”
“I know. I've been here all my life but I've been friends with a lot of people that have moved here,” she said.
“Okay class, take out your folders while I get Skylar catched up,” the teacher said. Immediately, as if there weren't enough people staring at me already, every head in the class looked around to find me.
And this is pretty much how my day went on just like that, and I soon found out I wasn't the only non-preppy girl that played flute. Guess who else did? Alexa! So I had a pretty interesting day. And I didn't need to worry about lunch, like most new people do. I already knew I was sitting with Patrick, Alexa and Patrick's band members: Pete, Andy and Joe.
“So it doesn't bother you that already you have more guy friends than girl friends?” Pete asked when we were almost done eating.
“Not at all. I like being friends with guys more than girls, there's way less drama,” I said sipping some vitamin water out of the bottle.
“Same here,” Alexa added.
“So what kind of music do you listen to?” Andy asked.
“I love The Beatles and Green Day. They're really different but they're my two favorite bands,” I replied.
“Nice musical taste, I like them both myself,” he replied.
“Yeah. I like a lot of classic rock bands because I grew up on it,” I added.
“Don't most of us?” Patrick asked. That is really true, all of our parents grew up in the same era so they'd listen to the same music, which in turn gets passed down to us.
“What are your other favorite classic rock bands?” Joe asked.
“Lynyrd Skynyrd, definitely. I also really like AC/DC and The Clash,” I answered.
“The Clash, I love them,” Alexa said.
“They were one of my mom's favorites so I kind of got into them,” I said.
“So do you have any brothers or sisters?” Alexa asked.
“I have a brother, but he lives with my mom where we used to live,” I said as if it were normal conversation.
“Oh, I'm sorry,” she replied.
“It's fine. I'm kind of happy my parents are finally separated like this. There's no more fighting and when they are together, like on vacation or visiting, they aren't fighting. And my brother and I keep in touch with e-mail,” I said.
“Really? That must really suck when it's better if they're apart,” Patrick said.
“It kind of is, a lot of it is because they live in the house I grew up in though. I get really homesick like that. I used to live in Maine, which is where me and my dad originally moved, but then we moved back to Pennsylvania. Then his job brought him here. But through the whole thing I made sure we had our half of the moon,” I said.
“Your half of the moon?” Pete asked. I could see curiosity in everyone's faces.
“In seventh grade, back when my parents were starting to fight, we had an art project where we made clay faces. In the end before you glazed them you had the choice to cut it in half and make two half moons. I did that and painted one dark blue with light blue glass spots and one tan-ish. I and my dad got the tan one and my mom and brother got the blue one,” I explained.
“Oh, that's really cool. It's an original way to keep your family linked, in a way,” Alexa said.
“I don't really know why I did it but I think that probably is the exact reason I did,” I replied.
“So how old is your brother anyway?” Andy asked.
“He's two years younger than me, fifteen,” I said. “I grew up kind of like a tomboy because we're so close. He always used to want me to play baseball or cars with him so I think that's why I'm not preppy. At all.”
“And you didn't play with Barbies?” Patrick teased.
“Well, no crap I played with Barbies. I wasn't a complete tomboy!” I smiled. “But I did have my own cars. I used to have a Duke's of Hazard car set.”
“Are you serious?” Pete laughed. “I did too!”
“And this is why I was a tomboy,” I laughed.
When I got home from school that day my dad was home. I guess our schedule here is a lot like it was a home.
“How was your first day?” he asked me as he walked into the kitchen, where our front door was.
“Surprisingly good,” I smiled.
“That is a pleasant surprise,” he said, now smiling too.
“How was your first day of work?” I asked.
“Not the worst, it's mainly like it was when I had to travel for work,” he replied.
“Oh. So it's not the greatest but you'll get used to it?” I asked.
“Yeah,” he said getting a glass of water. “Tell me more about your day. Did you make any friends?”
“Yeah, five, actually,” I said, also getting myself a glass of water.
“Really? What are their names?” he asked.
“Patrick, Alexa, Pete, Andy and Joe,” I said. I knew he noticed the fact that only one of those name's was a girls name. I kind of hoped he thought that Andy was a girl too, seeing as I used to be friends with a girl named Andie.
“One girl?” Nope, he knew.
“Dad, you know I like to keep out of the drama, and I only know Pete, Andy and Joe because they're the members of Patrick's band. He also introduced me to Alexa,” I said, trying to make them look good. Not like they were bad, just the fact that I always make more guy friends slightly irritates him.
“Yeah, well it would be nice if my little girl made some friends with other people's little girls,” he said.
“I know, Dad. Don't worry, it was only my first day, I'm sure I'll make more girl friends,” I reassured him. He gave me his “yeah right” look. I just rolled my eyes and walked into my room.
Ung, this room is so small. Back in Pennsylvania my room was the biggest in the house, and the coldest for that matter. It really sucked in the winter, I'd have to get a personal heater for my room, but in the summer it rocked. And now my room wasn't the smallest, but it wasn't big either. It was probably as big as my best friend Alisen's older brother's room. I didn't even have a big closet. Not that I needed one, since I have a dresser. Another downside is that I and my father have to share a bathroom. Which really, really sucks. He made such a fuss about me cleaning my bathroom when I had my own, now it's going to be torcher.
Good parts about this house: we have a hamper in the bathroom, and the bathroom isn't small either. It's nicely sized, so I and my dad will have enough room for everything. There's an “extra room”. My dad said he wanted to use it as an office. I say we should use it as a place to put exercise stuff. Or maybe it will just end up like last office, a mix of both. The kitchen isn't bad either. I can tell we're going to be doing a lot of cooking. I and my dad are very good cooks, yes, my dad is a good cook. But, we have to be, we don't like eating out.
Okay, so basically it's a regular house, and knowing my dad we're gonna fix it up and make it look nice, just like we always do. So I guess I'm not totally off on a bad foot. I'm actually pretty sure that that's partially because I met Patrick. He gave me friends, he helped me out and he plays in a band. Seriously, could I get a better first-day-friend than that?
I pulled out my math book. I got here mid-first-semester so I had homework on the first day of school. Luckily, I can catch up really easily in my classes. I'm really good at math and I love English and science. The best part is, I have biology this year. Here they have a different order in which you go through science classes than my old school so this is my second year of biology, and that's a really good thing because it's my favorite and best class.
Just as I was about to flip the book to the page we have homework on tonight my phone started buzzing. Alisen texted me.
Hey, how was your first day?
I texted back:
I made 5 friends, Patrick, Alexa, Pete, Andy and Joe. The guys are part of a band, and Alexa is one of their best friends. I didn't have to find someone to sit with at lunch, so that's a plus.
In about a minute my phone started buzzing again, this time she was calling me.
“Hey,” I answered.
“Hey,” she echoed. “So you once again made more guy friends than girls.” I could hear the smile in her voice.
“You know me,” I smiled.
“You're right. Just don't do or get into anything you'll regret,” she said.
“Yes Mommy,” I teased. We always used to call her the “Mom” of the group because she was always keeping us in line. “Again, you know me. I wouldn't do anything like that.”
“Hey, you're right outside Chicago now so you never know!” she said.
“Yeah, I know. So how is the Burg?” I asked. That is the official name of our town according to everyone in it. Seriously, you can put “the Burg” in an address on a letter and they'd know exactly what it meant. Actually, we did that quite frequently because we got sick of writing it out. You see, I and my friends send letters. Yeah, we actually send letters. This way we can keep memories instead of discarding them in an e-mail inbox.
“It's the same as usual. The jocks are loud and annoying as ever, the preps are really starting to get on my nerves and everyone else is good,” she replied.
“That's good. No one's in trouble now that I'm out of there?” I asked. I ask this every time I move.
“If you mean Ashley then not yet,” she replied.
“Okay, well keep an eye on her now that I'm not there to keep her in line. Sharon doesn't help,” I smiled.
“No kidding,” she laughed. “Well I guess I'll let you go so you don't go back to school tomorrow without any of your homework.”
“I'll talk to you later,” I said.
“You too,” she said and we hung up. I noted on that, every time I moved we ended with “talk to you later” and “you too” but when we were both in the Burg we used to see “see you later” and “see you”.
So now all I had left to do was dig into my homework. Joy.
A/N: Please review. I'll love you forever.
