Jessica Copperfield.
I could name three reasons why I have to be afraid. When you live on a scientific base in the Northwest, you have every excuse to be scared out of your mind. People are always getting stolen off the streets if they take one step out of their door after midnight. You have to make curfew, or else your dead meat. The government tries to tell us that we're safe, but everyone knows better than to believe them. They're the ones that got us into this mess....this war. But it's not the abductions that I'm most afraid of. I guess it would be the aliens. They're everywhere. We see them on our way to school when the bus passes by the jails that the government keeps them confined in. Of course, these aliens are the harmless ones. The government has extracted their abilities and run numerous amount of tests on them. (At least that's what they tell us on t.v.). When we past by them, I usually can see the ones that they call "children". They're olive skinned, tall, thin, have long black hair, and are very beautiful. They always run up to the gate when we come around, sometimes I can hear them shouting words if I have my window down. "Savevey! Savevey!" I think that's what they say. One time, I asked my dad what that meant, and he said they were crying," Save us! Save us!". I don't want to be mean, but I believe we need as much saving as they do. We are the ones trapped on this base against our will. Sometimes I imagine what it would be like to be back home in Canada. I long for the mountains, and rivers, and the cold air. Here, on the base, it's very hot and grassy. The air is always humid and we never have anything to do since the government refuses to build a pool, and it's too hot outside to go and play. My mother says kids should make their own fun, but I just can't imagine doing anything that even resembles fun here. So all I do is pray, pray to God that we can go back home. But, when I pray, I also think of my greatest fear. My sister, Lucy. Lucy is apart of a government resistance that broke out when the world found out about the aliens. I don't remember when she left, but I remember crying once I found out she was gone. She was my only sister, and was 3 years older than me, but we were very close. But, there's something that bothers me...the day before she left, she told me something that I never told Mom or Dad. We were sitting in our room, watching t.v., and they showed a image of the government resistance leaders. She turned to me and said," I'm going to have to kill you Jessica, if I ever become part of the Resistance, because you'll be one of them". I sort of laughed it off, but it bothered me constantly. And now that she's apart of the Resistance, I can't help but replay her words in my mind. For some reason, I think she meant it as a promise.
